Buertess L. "Bertie" Beals

BUERTESS L. “BERTIE” BEALS, 103, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away, Saturday, December 28, 2024 at her home in Cherokee, Iowa. 

Memorial services will be held on Friday, January 3, 2025 at 2:30 p.m. at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa.  Pastor Bruce Rapp will officiate.  Burial will be at the Pilot Township Cemetery in rural Cherokee, Iowa.  Online condolences may be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com.

Bertie was born on June 1, 1921 to Egbert and Ola (Willard) Worman at Mendon, Illinois.  She attended school until the 10th grade.  She was united in marriage to Joseph John Beals on April 25, 1937 at Davenport, Iowa. They moved to Cherokee, Iowa in December 1945 where they owned and operated Beals Motor Rewind until their retirement in May 1999.

She loved archaeology and together, she and Joe helped with preserving findings from many site excavations around Cherokee County.  She was a member of The Northwest Iowa Archaeological Society and The Iowa Archaeological Society.  She was also an active member of the Cherokee County Archives.  She loved to travel east to do genealogy research. Bertie and Joe also loved to go to the Black Hills in South Dakota.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 76 years; her parents; two daughters in infancy: Sandra Jean and Linda Grace; son Joseph Karl (Sandi) Beals; granddaughter Sandy (Bob) Kirchner; three siblings: Ola Lea (Fred) Buenger, Willard (Doris) Worman, and Marty Worsley Lane.

Bertie will lovingly be remembered by her daughter; four grandchildren: Craig (Chris) Wahlstrom of Hinton, IA; Linda (Jeff) Ducommun of Larrabee, IA; Karla (Brandon) Frehse of Everly, IA; and Joseph William (Jamie Wilger) of St. Louis, MO; three step grandchildren; six great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and many friends, including a dear friend, Holly Bakker.
