Duane S. Johnson, 73, passed away on Jan. 3, 2026, in Centennial, Colo., with his wife Shelley by his side.

Born on Feb. 15, 1952, in Kewanee, Ill., Duane lived a full and active life marked by dedication to family, hard work and a love for the outdoors.

Duane spent his early years in several Midwestern towns: Dixon, Ill.; Madison, Wis.; and Atlantic before graduating from Washington High School in Cherokee. He later attended Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz. After leaving ASU, Duane moved to Colorado where he established his own construction company, 4 x 4 Construction. Through years of commitment and perseverance, he built a successful business that he operated.

Duane was a devoted husband to Shelley Johnson and a proud father to Greg (Andrea) Johnson and Matt (Cameron) Johnson. He found great joy in supporting his sons' athletic pursuits and was often seen cheering them on from the sidelines. His role as grandfather brought him additional pride and happiness. He cherished time spent with his grandson Callen Johnson and granddaughter Juliette Johnson.

He is also remembered by his sister Janet Nagel and her husband Gary of Alta, along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends who were touched by his presence throughout the years.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Phyllis Johnson.

Outside of work and family life, Duane enjoyed golfing, boating and traveling with Shelley — pastimes that reflected his appreciation for both adventure and relaxation.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
