Edward Heinen

Edward A. Heinen, 85, of Johnston, and formerly of Cherokee, passed away Monday, April 28, 2025, at his home. Ed had spent the last several months living with his brother, Dick, enjoying many hobbies together, including woodworking, travelling and spending time with family and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, May 6, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee. Burial was at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Cherokee. Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home in Cherokee assisted the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.greenwoodfuneral.com. 

The oldest of 12, Ed spent his childhood growing up on the various farms his father worked on. He graduated from Algona High School in 1958 and eventually moved to Cherokee. There, he met Jean, who was bartending at the bowling alley. They both played league. They married on Nov. 24, 1972 at Quimby. They had two daughters, Kelly and Stacie.

Ed worked as a custodian for Cherokee Schools for 30 years. He made many tables and bookshelves for the teachers and staff over the years, as well as many bookshelves and other pieces for his kids, friends and family. He also enjoyed bowling for many years, spending time with family and friends, and spending time with his granddaughter, Mackenzie.

Ed was preceded in death by his wife Jean; his parents, Marie and Charles Heinen; in-laws, Marcella and Ralph Glover, Mildred Rupp; brother-in-law Raymond Glover; brothers, Chuck and Leroy; sister-in-law Karen Heinen; and infant brother Marvin.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Kelly Heinen (Scott Sargent) and Stacie (Dan) Thomsen; granddaughter Mackenzie Thomsen; sisters: Marlene Heinen, Patty Smith, Cathy (Mike) Mosbach, Mary (Pete) Wonders and Joanie (Dave) Ross;  brothers: Mike (Carla) Heinen, Johnny (Ann) Heinen and Dick Heinen; brother-in-law Butch Glover; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Edward Heinen
