The Hanover Village, located southwest of Alta at the junction of C65 and M27, may look like a ghost town to one driving through the area. This community center, which actively served the early settlers with basic household and farm supplies, is one of Iowa’s unique museums preserving the rural life prior to the store’s closing in 1964. Eleven buildings, seven of them original to the village, house displays recalling home life and machinery of that era: a sod-busting plow that broke the prairie, original store fixtures, a silver cornet played in the Hanover band, and trophies won by Hanover's national corn-husking champion.
Each year the Hanover Historical Society hosts events to promote community fun with the proceeds used to fund the maintenance and preservation efforts.
The annual tractor ride is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 16. The riders will gather at 8:30 a.m. at Hanover Village. Participants say it is a favorite ride as it is not too long, and there are interesting stops along the way.
The festival returns this year as a two-day event. Saturday, Aug. 23, will be a BBQ Cook Off and Corn Hole tournament. Also scheduled for late afternoon and early evening are wine tasting and music by Renegade Soul, a five-piece band playing country western music. A food truck and beer garden will provide food and refreshments. On Sunday, Aug. 23, the festival gates open at noon. Featured are many demonstrations, music by JK Country Band, petting zoo and special children's activities, and all of the buildings will be open to visitors.
The Hanover Village is open to tours for families and groups by appointment. Call 712-434-5416 for information.
