Letter to the Editor: Ugly ads aimed at Nate Willems are hogwash

Posted

My son Nate Willems is running for Iowa Attorney General. As a mom I was prepared for negative ads against him. But the ugly, vicious lies currently running are way beyond the norm for negative ads.

These ads claim that Nate is dangerous — that, as a legislator 17 years ago, he voted against mandatory monitoring for convicted sex offenders, and therefore, will not protect our children. That is, as my dad would say, hogwash. Iowans deserve the truth.

The truth: Nate voted against a bad amendment as did 65 other legislators, Democrats and Republicans. He then voted FOR the law that requires monitoring AND reporting of sex offenders. Thanks to fact checkers at KCCI in Des Moines and KCRG in Cedar Rapids for objective third-party investigations of these claims. I encourage you to google their posts.

I can assure my fellow Iowans that Nate Willems will protect the people of Iowa, especially the children. His three daughters will tell you that he is a protector. I know that he takes their safety seriously and am confident that, as Attorney General, Nate will protect your children and grandchildren. And he will not lie to you.

Arlie Willems, Mount Vernon
