Lois Mae Nelson, 94, of Cherokee passed away on Saturday morning, Aug. 29, 2026, at Cherokee Specialty Care.
Private family graveside services will be held. Public visitation will take place on Saturday, Sept. 5, from 10-11 a.m. at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Pastor David Hall will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee. Online condolences may be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com.
Lois was born on Jan. 4, 1932, to James and Georgia (Ausberger) Acheson at Fonda. She attended Fonda Community School and graduated in 1950. She was united in marriage to her husband Paul Nelson on June 4, 1959, at Waterloo. Together they had three sons: Jeff, Barry and Clifford.
Lois worked for the Cherokee Mental Health Institute, retiring in 1999.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Paul Nelson.
She is survived by her three sons: Jeff and Sharon Arndt-Nelson of Cherokee; Barry and Nancy Nelson of Cherokee; and Clifford and Michelle Nelson of Cherokee; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren: Josh and Amber Nelson; Zachary Nelson; Brian and Lizzy Nelson and their son Borin; Benjamin Nelson; Annalie Nelson; Kayla and Aaron Bush and their children Andrew, Jayden and Brody; Christopher and Cassie Nelson and their children Easton, Willow, and Sutton; and Colby Nelson and his children Layla and Dayton.
