Robert “Bud” A. Winterton, 86, formerly of Cherokee, passed away peacefully in Winter Haven, Fla., on Feb. 27, 2026.

Born Oct. 11, 1939, in Estherville, Bud was the son of the late Torger and Velva Winterton.

Bud was known for his strong work ethic. He was the manager of the Cherokee Fareway meat department in the 70s to the 90s. Later in retirement, he worked part-time at Radio Shack in Cherokee. Bud and Ruth were long-term members of the Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cherokee. Bud was also known for his warm friendship and deep devotion to family. Bud loved fishing, camping, traveling, and especially visiting Alaska.

Freemasonry was a central part of Bud’s life for nearly 50 years after being initiated in 1976. He faithfully served his lodge in many roles, including Worshipful Master, Masonic Instructor, Secretary and District Lecturer.

Bud was preceded in death by his wife Ruth; sons, Jeffrey and Daniel; sisters, Marcia Moffitt and Lois Willard; and son-in-law Kris Werner.

Bud is survived by his children: Doug (Lauren) Winterton, David (Becky) Winterton, Deborah Werner and Deanna Winterton; his grandchildren: Brandon (Maggie), Chelsea (Jonathon), Courtney, Emily (Andrew), Travis, Tyler (Shannon), Audrey, Dain (Fernanda), Justin (Natali), Tana (Manny) and William; and his great-grandchildren: Zoey, Oliver, Adelyn, Elan, Lisa, Marie, Elijah, Serena, Damion, Olivia, Jacob and Kristopher.

A celebration of life service is scheduled for Saturday, June 6, at 11 a.m. at Memorial Presbyterian Church. A light luncheon will follow. Internment of cremated remains will occur later that day at Swan Lake Township Cemetery in rural Emmet County.
