Scholarship available from the CCCB

Posted

The Cherokee County Conservation Board (CCCB) offers a $700 scholarship to graduating seniors from the Cherokee or MMCRU school district each year. Applications are due by April 1st.

The Steve Nelson Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to help a qualified Cherokee or MMCRU student pursuing a college degree that will allow them to enter into a career in fisheries and wildlife conservation or environmental sciences. This is not a need-based scholarship.

Applications are due April 1st of each year. Applications will be screened and a recommendation made by the CCCB Scholarship Committee. If no applicants are qualified, the scholarship will not be awarded. The award will be presented by the chairperson or designee of the CCCB board at the regular board meeting in May.

This scholarship was made with donations in memory of long-time board member Steve Nelson. With 23 years of service, his contributions to the success of the CCCB were instrumental. He graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Fisheries & Wildlife Biology and continued on to receive a Master’s of Science in Environmental & Forest Biology from State University of New York College of Environmental Science & Forestry. Steve was a lifelong learner who continued to research in order to improve conservation efforts and farming practices. Unfortunately, he passed away in an ATV accident in July 2020.

If you’d like to donate funds to support the continuation of this scholarship in memory of Steve Nelson, please make checks out to the CCCB and mail them to CCCB, 629 River Rd, Cherokee, IA 51012. You can also call our office to pay with credit card or e-mail us for an invoice.
