Letter to the Editor: Respect the land and landowners

Posted

As combines roll across fields and farm families work long hours to bring in the harvest, it is disheartening to see the amount of damage caused by careless actions.  Every year, vehicles are driven in fields, leaving ruts, destroying crops, and creating additional work for farmers who have spent months tending to that land.  Equally frustrating is the amount of trash discarded along country roads, in ditches, and even in fields.

For those who do not farm, it may be easy to overlook the impact of a single tire track or a few pieces of litter.  To a farmer, however, every acre represents an investment of time, money, and commitment.  Beyond the financial loss, debris left in fields can damage equipment, create safety hazards, and contaminate the very land farm families work so hard to preserve.

Rural landscapes are more than scenic countryside.  They are workplaces, family legacies, and the foundation of our food supply.  Farmers take great pride in caring for the land and leaving it better for the next generation.  Respecting private property, staying out of fields, and properly disposing of trash are simple ways everyone can help support the people who are working tirelessly to feed our communities.

Harvest is a season of gratitude and accomplishment.  Let us also make it a season of respect for the fields, the land, and the farm families who call it home.
