Luverne E. Gries, born May 27, 1932, in Galva to Edward and Mildred Gries, passed away peacefully at home in his sleep on Oct. 5, 2026, surrounded by his wife of 72 years, Alverta, and his beloved “pal,” Peso.
Luverne spent his childhood in the Galva area and worked for a local farmer while attending high school. He graduated from Sutherland High School in 1950. In 1953, he enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country for two years.
In 1954, Luverne married Alverta Weathers. Together, they spent most of their married life in Larrabee, building a lifetime of love, memories, laughter and companionship. Luverne worked for the Larrabee Elevator for several years before beginning a 33-year career at the Wilson Packing Plant in Cherokee. He retired in February 1997.
In 2001, Luverne and Alverta moved to Sierra Vista, Ariz., where they enjoyed their retirement years together with family and friends. Luverne loved his horses and cherished the companionship of his dogs, Peso and the late George.
Luverne was a devoted son, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, integrity and deep affection that will live on through the family and memories he held dear. The quiet comfort of his final moments beautifully reflected the life he built—one rooted in loyalty, companionship, and genuine connection. Though he will be deeply missed, the warmth of his presence and the enduring example of his life will forever inspire those who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife Alverta; son Lance (Harry Stahl); daughter Lorna Gries (Raymond) Sedillos; and his two grandchildren, Matthew (Amber) and Jeffrey (Taylor).
He requested that his services be private, and that he be laid to rest in the family plot in Sutherland.
