Warrior baseball wins four, drops one

The Alta-Aurelia baseball team went 4-1 this past week. First they took a 6-1 road win at OABCIG on Wednesday before a pair of varsity wins in a varsity double-header at West Monona on Thursday, 14-4 and 16-7. They lost a 9-5 home game to Spirit Lake on Friday but beat MMCRU 4-3 on the road on Monday.

Against OABCIG on Wednesday, the Warriors scored two runs in the first and third, but the Falcons put up a run in the bottom of the third. Alta-Aurelia added another two runs in the fourth for the 6-1 win.

Alta-Aurelia had six hits, five singles and a double, with three RBIs. They were walked three times, hit by a pitch and struck out seven times. Junior Gavin Sleezer scored two runs and hit a single and a double while sophomore sam Sennert scored a run, hit three singles and had an RBI. Senior Cale Brechwald scored two runs and had an RBI while junior Peyton Meyer hit a single and had an RBI.

Brechwald, Sleezer, Meyer, sophomore Camden Reinert and freshman Jaxson Page each stole a base in the game. Sennert pitched all seven innings and allowed four hits, one run, walked four and struck out three.

In the first win over West Monona, Alta-Aurelia scored four runs in the first while the Spartans followed with one in the bottom of the first. Alta-Aurelia put up another three in the top of the third while West Monona scored a run in the bottom of the third and fourth. The Warriors added one run in the fifth and six in the sixth as West Monona found one more in the sixth for the 14-4 final.

Alta-Aurelia had 10 hits, eight singles and two doubles, with eight RBIs. They were walked five times, hit by two pitches and struck out nine times. Page scored three runs and hit three singles with two RBIs, Meyer scored three times, hit two singles and had two RBIs, sophomroe Brayden Marshall hit a single and had two RBIs and freshman Maddux McCoy hit a double for two RBIs. Sennert scored thrice and hit a double, Sleezer scored twice and hit a single and sophomore Gabe Olsen scored once and hit a single.

The Warriors stole a staggering 19 bases in the game, led by Sleezer with four while Sennert, Reinert, Meyer and Page had three each, Olsen had two and sophomore Payton Syndergaard stole one. Eighth grader Tilman Bern pitched just over three innings and allowed four hits, three runs, two earned, walked two, hit three batters and struck out one. Meyer pitched just over an inning and struck out one and Sleezer threw for an inning and allowed one hit, one run and struck out one.

In the second game against West Monona, Alta-Aurelia scored a run in the first while the Spartans put up four in the second. The Warriors added five runs in the fourth and both teams scored a run in the fifth. Alta-Aurelia put up five runs in the sixth and four in the seventh and West Monona found two in the bottom of the sixth for the 16-7 final.

Alta-Aurelia had 12 hits, nine singles and three doubles, for nine RBIs. They were walked seven times, hit by three pitches and struck out seven times. McCoy scored three runs and hit a single and a double with two RBIs while Brechwald scored thrice and hit two singles for a pair of RBIs. Reinert scored three runs, hit three singles and had an RBI, Page scored twice, hit a single and had an RBI, and Olsen scored three times, and hit a single and a double.

The Warriors stole nine base as Reinert took three, Olsen and Brechwald stole two each and Sleezer and Page stole one each. Reinert pitches for five innings and allowed one hit, six runs, two earned, walked seven, hit two batters and struck out seven. McCoy threw for two innings and allowed one hit, hit one batter and struck out one, and Olsen saw some time on the mound where he allowed one run and walked two.

In the loss to Spirit Lake on Friday, the Warriors put up all five of their runs in the bottom of the first inning while the Indians scored four in the second inning. The Warriors held the one-run lead until the top of the seventh where Spirit Lake scored five more runs to take the 9-5 win.

Alta-Aurelia had seven hits, four singles and three doubles, with five RBIs. They were walked three times, hit by a pitch and struck out nine times. Meyer scored a run and hit a double with two RBIs while Brechwald scored a run and hit two singles. Reinert scored a run and hit a single with an RBI, Olsen hit a double with an RBI and Page had an RBI.

Sleezer had the team’s only stolen base in the game. Marshall pitched six innings and allowed seven hits, four runs, walked four, hit one batter and struck out four. Meyer and Sleezer combined to pitch an inning where Sleezer hit one batter and struck one out, and Meyer allowed two hits, five runs, one earned, and walked three.

Against MMCRU on Monday, Alta-Aurelia scored a run in each the second and third innings before MMCRU took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third. Alta-Aurelia put up a pair of runs in the sixth for the 4-3 win.

Alta-Aurelia had five hits, four singles and a home run, for three RBIs. Sleezer hit the home run and had an RBI while Olsen hit a single and had an RBI. Page scored a run and had an RBI, Reinert and Meyer each scored a run and hit a single and Sennert hit a single.

Reinert and Meyer each stole two bases while Sleezer, Sennert and Page each took one. Sennert pitched six innings and allowed five hits, three runs, walked one, hit one batter and struck out seven. Brechwald threw for an inning where he allowed one hit and struck out two.

Alta-Aurelia is now 19-7 and will host 2-14 Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire on Saturday for the first round of the substate tournament.
